To help prepare the troop for our trip during the summer of 2016

Why Philmont? Why High adventure? 
⦁    The largest youth camp in the world
⦁    leaves lasting memories with youth and fosters development in character and leadership
⦁    It has been described as a life changing trip by almost every scout who has attended
⦁    Thirty-four staffed camps and 55 trail camps are operated at Philmont
⦁    Philmont is the BSA’s oldest and largest national high adventure base. 
⦁    Over 137,000 acres of mountainous backcountry in northeastern New Mexico.
⦁    Altitude ranges from 6,000 to over 12,000 feet above sea level.
⦁    Backcountry programs include rock climbing, mountain biking, black-powder rifles, logging, horseback riding, mine tours,  gold panning, search & rescue and many more.
⦁    Grow teamwork, leadership and outdoor skills
⦁    Philmont is home to the only know Tyrannosaurus Rex footprint in the world.

Qualifications:
 Participants must be at least 14 years old by date of arrival at Philmont OR completed 8th grade and be at least 13 years old by time of arrival. Boy Scouts must be First Class Rank. First Aid, Camping, Cooking and Hiking or Backpacking merit badges are also recommended. All participants must meet Philmont's height/weight standards in order to trek in the backcountry.  Active participation in 191 crew training & shakedown events is required.

Scouts attending the Appalachian Trail Backpacking Trip on Saturday February 16, 2013 will need this permission form signed by a parent or guardian.

ANDREW SKURKA, author and National Geographic “Adventurer Of The Year;” March 18th 7 PM; Washington Theater, 165 East Washington Ave. Washington, NJ. Admission is $10, or $5 for Scouts in uniform

Skurka is best known for his 4,700-mile 6-month Alaska-Yukon Expedition, his 6,875-mile 7-month Great Western Loop, and his 7,775-mile 11-month Sea-to-Sea Route. He has been named an “Adventurer of the Year” by the National Geographic Society and by Outside, and “Person of the Year” by Backpacker. He is the author of The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide: Tools and Techniques to Hit the Trail, which was released by National Geographic Books

On March 18th Skurka will give an adventure-themed slideshow, “Circling Alaska and Yukon: A 4,700-mile 6-month journey by foot, skis and packraft through Big Wilderness.” This entertaining and thoughtful presentation features stunning imagery, emotional videos and some of Skurka’s best stories.

The presentation lasts about 90 minutes, including an intermission, question and answer session, and schwag raffle. Skurka will be available before and after the presentations to sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase.

Scouts attending the weekend Appalachian Trail Backpack Trip must have this Permission Form completed and signed by a parent or guardian.

The online signup for the Appalachian Trail Experience Backpacking Trip is now offline.

Those that have signed up online have been transferred to a physical signup sheet at the weekly troop meeting
